Rev. Newquist to be Installed at Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church

For the first time in twenty years, on Sunday, January 12, 3pm, a new pastor will be installed at Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church in Shepherdstown, WV. This service of worship will formally establish the pastoral relationship between The Reverend Gusti Linnea Newquist and the historic Presbyterian congregation.

As a poet, preacher, teacher, and healer, Rev. Newquist is delighted to serve a community that shares her commitment to spiritual formation and social action rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ. She brings with her a loving commitment as a pastor with experience among diverse populations and a background in a broad range of social ministries and justice advocacy.

“As soon as I saw the position available at SPC, I knew God was calling me here,” Newquist said. “To be able to serve a community committed to Radical Hospitality, Holistic Spirituality, and Engaged Compassion is a dream come true.”

The feeling is mutual.

“I love the tone she sets and the way she keeps us on track,” said Lois Spreen, Clerk of Session. “I think her observations about SPC are spot on and I am excited about what the future holds under her leadership.”

That future will most certainly include even greater emphasis on ministry with children and youth, as will be experienced Sunday afternoon. The service will include a special blessing of the children, along with readings and prayers provided by the youth of the church. Child care will be provided, although Rev. Newquist encourages parents not to worry about fussy children in worship. “They are angel voices in our midst,” she said.
