Racial Equity and Justice

Inclusion at SPC also means reckoning with racial injustice, past and present. In partnership with the NAACP and with the guidance of the Equal Justice Initiative and in service to truth telling, we installed a memorial marker for Joe Burns, a Black man who was lynched near Shepherdstown in 1886.

Learn more about our racial justice work in partnership with the NAACP– https://berkeleycountywvnaacp.com/learn-more/community-remembrance-projects/   Along with Shepherd University and the Presbyterian Historical Society, we’re researching SPC’s own racial history and responsibilities to the Indigenous Peoples on whose land we worship.
